Outlook not working

Quick repair

Online Repair

Online repair is the process of repairing Office programs using the copy of programs from office server. The program files and installation files will get verified by the Microsoft Office server from which we install Microsoft Office on the computer. The online repair will replace or repair the corrupted files and make the Office program work properly. And you could use Outlook without any issues once repair is complete.

Step 1. Open control panel

Step 2. Navigate to Programs and Features

Step 4. Click on change and select online repair from the Repair options.

Step 5. Check the status once repair is finished.

System File checking or SFC Scan.

System file checker tool is an advanced mechanism to check and verify the missing and corrupted system files in the operating system. This utility will allow the windows to scan and restore the missing/corrupted files.

If windows resource protection files are missing, your computer may not work properly and it may go malfunctioning such as software installation may throw up errors, computer may crash or restart frequently. Outlook email not working error can be fixed by performing SFC scan.

Follow the steps to run System file checker tool or sfc.exe

  1. Click on windows key
  2. Search for command prompt or cmd
  3. Outlook email not working
  4. Right click and run the command prompt as administrator.
  5. If prompted for administrator password or confirmation click password or click allow.
  6. Once the command prompt is open, type the following command and click enter

SFC /SCANNOW

The SFC /SCANNOW command will scan and verify all protected system files in the computer and restore the corrupted files with cached copy in the computer located at %WinDir%\System32\dllcache which represents windows system folder.

Note: Do not close the command prompt until the verification is 100% complete.

  1. Try installing Microsoft Office once the SFC scan is completed.

Disable Unwanted Add-ons

You might face Outlook not working errors in your Outlook programs due to unwanted add-ons in your computer/ Office program. It is recommended to disable add-ons to fix the “not responding or program not opening” errors. You could check the program without add-ons by opening the Outlook or such Office program by opening in safe mode.

Steps to disable add-ons in Outlook

Step 1. Open run command box

Step 2. Type Outlook / safe and click on enter

Step 3. Once Outlook in safe mode is opened click on file

Step 4. Select Option tab under files

Step 5. Click on Add dins from Options tab.

Step 6. On manage add-ons, click on Go

Step 7. Uncheck all add-ons and Click OK.

Step 8. Try Opening Outlook normally once add-ons are disabled

Uninstall and reinstall the Latest Office programs

In most of the cases the previous version of Office installed on the computer may create error in Office 365 or Office 2016 or Office 2013 as a result to avoid duplication. It may throw up error code while installing or upgrading the office program. Hence is recommended to remove or uninstall preinstalled Microsoft Office before installing the latest Office program.

To uninstall or update previous version of office:

  1. Open control panel and select programs and features
  2. Click on Microsoft Office and select Uninstall
  3. Once uninstall is finished, Try installing the Latest version of Office

To manually remove duplicate office contents:

  1. Open %program files%
  2. Navigate to Program files > Microsoft Office
  3. Then delete Microsoft Office 15, Microsoft Office 16 and Microsoft Office folders
  4. Open %program files(x86)%
  5. Navigate to Microsoft Office
  6. Then delete Microsoft Office 15, Microsoft Office 16 and Microsoft Office folders

Remove previous Office keys mannually:

  1. Open registry editor
  2. Navigate to below keys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicrosoftAppVISV

HKEY_CU RRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

  1. Delete the keys
